WHO Dr Chan calls for statutory restrictions on M2K

 WHO Director-General reiterates calls for statutory restrictions on food marketing to children. On 22 June, WHO Director General Dr Margaret Chan gave a speech at the third meeting of the Commission on Ending Childhood Obesity (CECHO) in Hong Kong during which she highlighted the need for regulatory and statutory approaches to reduce the marketing of ‘unhealthy’ food and beverages to children. She took a particular tough stance against the food and beverage industry and warned about the risk of industry’s influence on public health policies.

WHO Director denounces global marketing of “unhealthy products” in World Health Assembly opening speech. On 18 May, Dr. Margaret Chan, the Director General of WHO, spoke at the opening of the sixty-eight Session of the World Health Assembly, in Geneva, Switzerland. During her speech she denounced the marketing of “unhealthy products”, a major contributor - according to her - to the increase of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs), which is the main driver of premature death globally.

Chile adopts stringent nutrition criteria for M2K restrictions

Chilean President signs into law nutrition criteria underpinning marketing restriction to <14s. On 16 April, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet signed into law the implementing regulation to the 2012 Law 20.606 on Nutrition and the Composition of Food and its Advertising, which sets the nutrition criteria applicable to the marketing and labelling of processed food and beverage products.

Polish Ministry of Culture proposes to ban ‘unhealthy’ food advertising to under 16s

In the latest draft amendment to the Broadcasting Law released on 24 April 2015, the Ministry of Culture proposes to ban ‘unhealthy’ food (to be defined by the Health Ministry) advertising around programmes aimed at people under the age of 16.
